⚡ TL;DR
- Worth it: 4+ countries, 10+ travel days, especially Germany/Switzerland/Austria/Benelux
- Not worth it: 1-2 countries, short trips, France-heavy routes
- Hidden cost: Reservation fees add €10-50 per train in France, Italy, Spain
- Best value: Countries where you can hop on without reservations (Germany, Switzerland)
How Eurail Pass Pricing Works
The Eurail Global Pass comes in two flavors:
- Flexi Pass — Choose X travel days within a time window (e.g., 4 days within 1 month). Best for most travelers.
- Continuous Pass — Unlimited travel for X consecutive days. Only worth it if you're traveling every single day.
2026 Prices (2nd class, adult)
| Flexi Pass | Price | Per Day |
|---|---|---|
| 4 days / 1 month | €211 | €53 |
| 5 days / 1 month | €249 | €50 |
| 7 days / 1 month | €296 | €42 |
| 10 days / 2 months | €362 | €36 |
| 15 days / 2 months | €434 | €29 |
The Hidden Cost: Reservation Fees
This is what most guides don't tell you. The pass gets you on the train, but many high-speed trains require a separate reservation that costs extra:
| Country | Train | Fee | Required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇩🇪 Germany | ICE | €0 | ❌ |
| 🇨🇭 Switzerland | All trains | €0 | ❌ |
| 🇦🇹 Austria | ÖBB Railjet | €0-3 | ❌ |
| 🇮🇹 Italy | Frecciarossa | €13 | ✅ |
| 🇪🇸 Spain | AVE | €10-13 | ✅ |
| 🇫🇷 France | TGV domestic | €10-20 | ✅ |
| 🇫🇷 France | TGV international | €25-50 | ✅ |
| 🏴 Eurostar | London trains | €35-40 | ✅ |
Pro tip: In Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, you can just hop on any train with your pass — no reservation, no extra cost. These are the most "pass-friendly" countries.
Country-by-Country Verdict
Best for passes. No reservations needed. ICE trains run every hour. Just show your pass and sit anywhere.
Amazing for passes. Trains, buses, boats, and even some mountain railways included. Consider the Swiss Travel Pass for Switzerland-only trips.
Very pass-friendly. ÖBB Railjet is free to ride. Great with Germany as a combo trip.
Moderate. €13 reservation per Frecciarossa ride adds up. Regional trains are free but slow. Watch out for Friday rail strikes.
Difficult. AVE reservations required and limited passholder seats. Consider Renfe Spain Pass instead — it includes reservations for free.
Worst for passes. TGV reservations mandatory, limited passholder seats that sell out fast, and cheap Ouigo trains don't accept passes at all. Book very early or consider buying tickets directly.
