💰 Price Table
✅ Pros
- Covers ALL JR Hokkaido trains across the entire island — Hakodate to Wakkanai, Abashiri, Kushiro
- All limited express trains included (Super Hokuto, Kamui, Ozora etc.) — no extra surcharge
- JR Hokkaido buses also covered — free rides to Noboribetsu Onsen and scenic routes
- ~¥1,000 cheaper when bought overseas — save by purchasing before arriving in Japan
- Free seat reservations included — book ahead for popular routes
- Flexible 5/7/10-day options — pick 10 days for deep exploration or 5 for highlights
- Sapporo–Hakodate limited express is ¥9,000 one-way — one round trip pays for the 5-day pass (¥22,000)
- Children half price (ages 6-11) — family-friendly
❌ Cons
- Does NOT cover Hokkaido Shinkansen (Hakodate–Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto) — need separate ticket toward Tokyo
- Consecutive days only — no flexi option, so plan your itinerary tightly
- Winter (Dec–Feb) heavy snow can cancel or severely delay trains, especially on eastern Hokkaido routes
- Hokkaido is massive — long travel times between cities (Sapporo–Kushiro is 4 hours) — transit days eat into your pass
- Sapporo subway and tram NOT included — still need separate tickets for city transit
- Rapid Airport train to Sapporo is covered, but other airport transport is not
- Available to foreign visitors on tourist visa only — work/student visas not eligible
- 10-day pass at ¥37,000 is not cheap — need a packed itinerary to break even
👍 Best For
- Full Hokkaido road-trip-by-rail — Sapporo + Hakodate + Asahikawa + Eastern Hokkaido in one pass
- Winter trips: snow festivals, skiing, onsen hopping (Feb Sapporo Snow Festival + Noboribetsu combo)
- Onsen circuit: Noboribetsu → Toya → Jozankei — JR buses cover the route
- Summer lavender fields in Furano/Biei + Asahiyama Zoo day trip
- Eastern Hokkaido nature: Kushiro Wetlands → Shiretoko → Abashiri drift ice (winter only)
👎 Not For
- Staying in Sapporo city only — a ¥830 subway day pass is far cheaper
- Brief 1-2 day Hokkaido stopover — minimum 5-day pass won't pay off
- Need Shinkansen from Hakodate to Tokyo — that segment is NOT covered
- Ultra-budget travelers — highway buses + budget airlines may be cheaper
- Single-city business trips
💡 Pro Tips
⚠️ Common Pitfalls
- Assuming the Hokkaido Shinkansen (Hakodate–Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto) is included — it is NOT, you need a separate ticket
- Not buying overseas in advance — you end up paying an extra ¥1,000 for no reason
- No backup plan for winter — left stranded when blizzards cancel trains; check the weather forecast ahead of time
- Not reserving seats on popular routes (Sapporo–Hakodate Super Hokuto) — unreserved cars can be packed in peak season
- Underestimating Hokkaido's size — cramming too many cities into 5 days means spending every day in transit
- Forgetting that JR buses are also included — paying separately for the Noboribetsu Onsen bus when it was already covered
- Not dressing warmly enough in winter — temperatures below -10°C are common in Hokkaido, and you wait outdoors between transfers
- Using the pass only for rides within Sapporo — the city subway is more suitable for getting around Sapporo
