๐Ÿ”„ Alternative Routes

Night Bus (~7-8 hours)

ยฅ3,000-6,000 from Tokyo or Shinjuku Station. Saves a night's accommodation but exhausting. Willer Express and JR Bus are main operators.

Flight (1h15m flight + airport time)

Haneda to Itami ~ยฅ8,000-15,000. With city transfers, total is 4-5 hours. Shinkansen wins on time and convenience.

Local Trains (JR conventional) (~8-9 hours)

With Seishun 18 Kippu ~ยฅ2,410/day, multiple transfers needed. For train enthusiasts and ultra-budget travelers โ€” nice scenery but very time-consuming.

โ“ FAQ

How long is the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto?

Nozomi (fastest) takes about 2h 15m, Hikari about 2h 40m, and Kodama about 3h 40m. All depart from Tokyo Station to Kyoto Station. Nozomi runs every ~10 minutes, Hikari every ~30 minutes.

Can I ride the Nozomi with a JR Pass?

Yes, but you need a Nozomi/Mizuho surcharge ticket (ยฅ4,960/ride). Or ride the Hikari for free with your pass โ€” only 25 minutes longer. Most people take the Hikari and save the surcharge. If you're in a hurry, it's just one train wait.

Is the JR Pass worth it for this route?

A 7-day JR Pass costs ยฅ50,000. Tokyo-Kyoto round trip is ยฅ13,320ร—2=ยฅ26,640. Just this round trip alone doesn't justify the pass. But add Kyoto-Osaka (ยฅ580), Kyoto-Nara (ยฅ720), Tokyo JR lines, etc., and it easily pays off. Use our calculator for your specific itinerary.

How to see Mt. Fuji? Which side should I sit on?

Heading from Tokyo to Kyoto, sit on the right side (E seat)! Mt. Fuji appears about 40-50 minutes after departure (between Shin-Yokohama and Shizuoka). Spectacular on clear days. Best visibility in winter and mornings. May be invisible on cloudy days or in summer.

Do I need to reserve seats in advance?

Not required. Shinkansen has non-reserved cars (first 3 cars) โ€” just show up and sit. But during peak seasons (Golden Week, Obon, New Year), reserve a seat. JR Pass holders can reserve for free at any JR ticket office. You can also use the SmartEX app.
