💰 Price Table
✅ Pros
- Full Tohoku Shinkansen covered (Tokyo–Sendai–Morioka–Shin-Aomori) — Sendai one-way is ¥11,000, one round trip pays for the pass
- Tobu Railway to Nikko included — rare private railway coverage, no extra ticket needed
- Sanriku Railway (tsunami recovery coastal line) covered — a unique and meaningful experience
- GALA Yuzawa ski resort accessible in winter — Shinkansen goes directly to the slopes
- Free seat reservations included — guaranteed seats on busy Shinkansen
- Covers Iwate Galaxy Railway, Aoimori Railway and other third-sector lines — comprehensive Tohoku coverage
- Tokyo Monorail (Haneda Airport line) also included — free airport-to-city transfer
- 5 days at ¥30,000 with huge coverage — Tokyo to Aomori alone costs ¥17,000+ one-way
❌ Cons
- Does NOT include Tokaido Shinkansen (toward Kyoto/Osaka) — the most common misconception
- Consecutive 5 days only — no flexi option, plan your itinerary tightly
- 2026 price revision: 5-day ¥30,000 → ¥35,000, new 10-day option at ¥50,000
- Tohoku direction only — cannot reach Kansai, Kyushu, or other regions
- City subways and local buses NOT included — Sendai subway etc. cost extra
- Winter heavy snow can delay or cancel Tohoku trains — especially toward Akita/Aomori
- Tourist visa holders only — work/student visas not eligible
- GALA Yuzawa only operates in winter (~Dec–May) — pointless to visit in summer
👍 Best For
- Tokyo + Tohoku classic: Sendai (beef tongue + Matsushima Bay) → Hiraizumi → Morioka → Aomori
- Nikko World Heritage day trip + deep Tohoku combo — one pass covers both directions
- Winter skiing + onsen: GALA Yuzawa slopes + Tohoku hot springs (Ginzan, Nyuto onsen etc.)
- Festival season: Aomori Nebuta / Sendai Tanabata — Shinkansen round trips far exceed pass price
- Sanriku coastal railway journey — experience the inspiring tsunami recovery line
👎 Not For
- Not heading toward Tohoku — completely useless for Kansai/western Japan trips
- Staying within Tokyo city — a ¥600-900 subway day pass is far better than ¥30,000
- Only doing day trips around Tokyo — Tokyo Wide Pass at ¥15,000/3 days is more suitable
- Budget travelers visiting Sendai only — round-trip tickets at ¥22,000 are cheaper than the ¥30,000 pass
- Need to reach Hokkaido — this pass stops at Shin-Aomori, Hokkaido Shinkansen NOT included
💡 Pro Tips
⚠️ Common Pitfalls
- Assuming the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto is included — it goes in the opposite direction and is operated by JR Central, not JR East
- Not knowing about the 2026 price revision — passes purchased after February 18 cost ¥35,000 at the new price
- Confusing this with the JR East Nagano-Niigata Area Pass — the two passes cover different directions
- Confusing this with the Tokyo Wide Pass — if you are only doing day trips around Tokyo, the Wide Pass at ¥15,000 is a better deal
- No backup plan for heavy winter snow in Tohoku — the Ou Main Line and Tazawako Line are especially prone to cancellations
- Assuming it reaches Hokkaido — the pass only goes as far as Shin-Aomori; the Hokkaido Shinkansen requires a separate ticket
- Not reserving popular Shinkansen seats in advance — the Tohoku Shinkansen is packed during peak periods (Obon / New Year)
- Forgetting that the Tokyo Monorail is included — paying separately from Haneda Airport when it was already covered by the pass
